Whether during lessons in class, in practice at home, or when performing on stage, confidence is a very important part of being successful in music. While some people are born with an innate sense of confidence, many lack this trait despite their incredible talents – and this is unfortunately very common in musicians and creative people alike. Here are a few ways to boost your confidence as a musician:

Always be prepared
There is no such thing as being “too prepared” for something. Every musical project, no matter how big or small, requires plenty of preparation. Over-preparing means that you really know what you’re doing and are ready for anything that may come your way – and this is one of the best ways to boost your confidence and improve the quality of everything you do. Whether it’s for an audition, rehearsal, music exam, gig, or even a regular lesson, being well-prepared is the key to doing well, with confidence.

Track your progress
Like with many other things, when you come across struggles or weaknesses in your music training, it’s easy to miss how far you’ve actually come from the beginning. There are plenty of different methods you can use to track your progress as a musician, and it’s one of the greatest ways to boost your confidence and keep you moving forward. When you feel like you’re stuck, go back to some old practice sheets that you used to struggle with, and you will find comfort in realising how far you’ve progressed.

Give and take advice
When it comes to improving your skills, it’s great to spend time with musicians who are more advanced from you to get tips and advice and be encouraged to work up to their level. At the same time, it’s also very important to spend time with musicians at the same level as you and even lower, where you can help each other through challenges and support each other. This will help you to not only feel more comfortable, confident, and less under pressure, but you will also find the fun in it and enjoy your practice time.

So no matter where in your music studies you are, you can always benefit from keeping these ways to boost your confidence in mind. For more interesting tips and facts about all things music, click here to check out our blog or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.
