So which is it? The first thing you need to consider is whether you want to become a classical virtuoso or rock guitar god. If you’re not sure, then we recommend that you speak with one of our tutors for further guidance.
If you want to become a classical player, perhaps moving up through classical grades, it would make more sense to learn on an acoustic guitar. However, if rock, blues, metal, or funk are more suited to your tastes, then an electric guitar is an absolute must.
One popular myth which you may have heard is that you should start on acoustic and switch to electric later. While in the past this may have been true (because acoustic guitars came in different sizes, so children could play using a smaller guitar) electric guitars now come in a variety of sizes too.
Another myth is that you can only learn how to read music by playing classical guitar. At the School of Popular Music, our guitar lessons can be tailored to suit your own particular needs. That means you can certainly learn how to read music while playing an electric guitar.
At the end of the day it all boils down to which style you are more excited about. Like everything, practice makes perfect, and there will be times where you find something particularly difficult. So if you’re passionate about it, you have a far greater chance to shine.
If you want to play ‘traditional’ folk or pop, it might be a good idea to start on acoustic, while electric would be best for blues, rock and metal.
