Do you ever wish that you could transcribe music by simply listening to it? By training your musical ear, you’ll be able to compose the music in your head with ease. Here’s why and how to develop your musical ear:

Music in your mind
Most musicians and music lovers often have melodies playing in their head throughout their day, whether it’s the tune of their favourite song, a jingle they heard on the radio, or a melody they came up with while randomly humming away to chores. In order to train your ear, you must first learn to really listen to the music in your mind. This is known as “audiation”:

Play it back
Singing your favourite songs and tunes out loud can actually help you to develop your mind’s ear. Being able to remember the melodies, rhythms, pitch, and timbre that you hear in your head involves audiation – and there are ways that you can improve this even further:

– Replay the song over and over
– Once it is clear in your mind, sing it out loud until perfected
– Go to your instrument and try to play it while singing it simultaneously

If you apply these three simple steps to your ear training process, you will find that much like everything else, it becomes easier the more you practise, and slowly but surely you will be able to start transcribing your favourite songs and even composing music of your own!

Not only do you now have an idea of how to further improve your musical ear, but you also have a great excuse to sing your heart out in the shower!
