It’s widely known that children learn and take information in much faster than adults do, meaning that when it comes to learning something new, the earlier a child starts, the better. Here are some reasons why it’s best to send your child to music lessons from the earliest age possible:
Children learn faster than adults
Getting into the technical and biological side of things, kids learn faster because of something called the prefrontal cortex in the brain. This is where memory is stored, and it is far more developed in adults than in children. Due to the increased development, adults experience what is called ‘functional fixedness’, meaning that they see things as they are. In contrast, children are far more creative, meaning that when they look at something, they can interpret it in a multitude of different ways.
To sum this up, kids’ minds are designed to learn, and adults’ minds are designed to perform. Children have the ability to be creative when learning new things, which is a great way to help them develop their skills while they are still young. This is one of the reasons to start early when it comes to music lessons, as well as other things.
It helps early development
Music and singing play a huge role in early development, and nowadays, it’s found everywhere. Babies and children learn so much from music – the alphabet, how to count, vocabulary, and basic sentence structure, apart from a sense of rhythm and tune. Ever wondered why you remember song lyrics and tunes easier than other things? It’s because music stimulates the brain and accelerates development.
Exposing children to music at a younger age – even from the womb – can help with their memory, perception, language, vocabulary, spoken and reading skills, and enrich their overall cognitive development.
Several other benefits
Starting music lessons at an early age can contribute towards building and developing several skills and traits, such as discipline, self-expression, patience, confidence, and the ability to work both in a team and as a team leader. Such benefits will not only help your child in their early years, but throughout their entire life.
Here at the School of Popular Music in Guernsey, we offer Mini’s classes for toddlers, where they get a taste of a few instruments like guitar, piano, drums, singing, and some fun music theory – plus a drink and a biscuit at the end of the class! We use our own pre-grade levelling system to track their progress, and ensure that they are rewarded for their achievements.
Of course, learning music as an adult is still possible too! So if you’re interested in starting music lessons yourself, don’t give up – We offer classes and individual tutoring for all ages! Get in touch with us today.
