Anything you plan to do in the future is a goal, and the best way to reach it is by setting yourself mini-goals throughout the years to “section” the steps towards achieving it. This also applies to music goals; whether you want to be a teacher, producer, performer, or conductor, goal setting is crucial for propelling you towards success. Here’s why:
One Step at a Time
Looking at the bigger picture might be exciting when you think of the possibilities, but it’s also quite daunting and very vast. Keeping the main destination in mind, set yourself smaller goals that you can reach within smaller amounts of time. This will help you to focus better on each individual step and will make the entire journey much easier and less stressful and intimidating.
Believe in Yourself
Setting music goals isn’t just about creating a plan for your future; it’s about fueling your ambition and inspiring you to aim for things that would otherwise seem scary or impossible. Having said that, goals are more than merely dreams or aspirations because you need to actually work hard towards achieving them. If you never progress, your ‘goals’ are merely thoughts floating around in your imagination, so use them as motivation to work at what you want to achieve.
Know What You Want
Setting goals helps us to figure out what we really want and don’t want by showing us what we’re truly passionate about. Sometimes we set goals that might be aiming for something we think we want, when in actual fact we want (or need) something different. By constantly reassessing ourselves and our goals, we are able to determine what we are truly enthusiastic about, encouraging us to work harder for it.
Goals can be anything; buying new equipment, sitting for an exam, hosting your own event, learning a new instrument… Your options are limitless.
