94 SOPM students took their Trinity Rock and Pop grades with us during the week commencing Monday 01 July. This was by far the most we have ever had taking exams in one session!

We were delighted to welcome Nikki Franklin back to Guernsey. Nikki was yet again very impressed by the attitude and composers shown by all of our awesome students. she also confirmed that she gave out her highest score this year to a SOPM student, for the second year in a row!

World Record Attempt!

What a day! Thanks so much to everyone who came to watch us attempt to set the new world record. We never expected so many! ????

We didn’t quite make it but Rodney gave it his best shot and SOPM voices created a wonderful noise. Unfortunately, Ellie, the cow seems to suffer from stage fright!

We have many more exciting SOPM 5 events to come this year, all in aid of our goal to raise £10k for our two charities – Guernsey Mind and Children in Need. We have set up a Just Giving page raising money, please help us hit our target!

SOPM WORLD RECORD

Summer School 2019

Summer School 2019 is one of the most important dates in our calendar. This year was our biggest and most ambitious yet with 50 students performing in 10 brand new bands!
Some of these students were taking to the stage for the first-ever time whilst others just can’t get enough of it and have taken part many times before.
Opportunities included: busking, professional recording, professional band photoshoot, working with a graphic designer on band logo, performing at the Fermain Tavern and taking part in the one and only band camp.

3 Reasons to Send Your Child to the SOPM Music Summer School

The scholastic year will soon be coming to an end, so it’s time to start preparing for the summer holidays. From taking up new hobby classes to going on a family vacation, the options are endless. One of the great options is sending your children to a summer school, such as the SOPM Music Summer School. Here’s why:

Continue skills development
By sending your child to summer school, you are giving them a unique and fun opportunity to keep practising and developing their musical skills, as well as giving them something to look forward to and practise for, encouraging them to set goals and work towards reaching them.

Encourage independence
During the summer holidays, you and your child might be spending more time together than usual, and while this is highly beneficial, it’s also important for your child to do things independently. At summer school, they will be able to interact with tutors and friends while learning new things and facing challenges in the process.

Build their confidence
During our music summer school, not only will the children be learning about lots of new music-related topics, but they will also be participating and performing in our small showcase. This sets a challenge for the children while also keeping them in a safe and friendly environment where they will feel motivated and supported, thus building their confidence, and helping them to overcome their nerves.

What’s included in the School of Popular Music Summer School:
– Band Mentoring and Music Tuition
– Various Performances
– Busking
– Mixing and Set-Up
– Showcase Gig at The Fermain Tavern

Celebrating Christmas in Guernsey

Guernsey begins its preparations for Christmas from the end of November, starting with the Christmas lights in St Peter Port. From then on, markets, longer shopping hours, Christmas pantos, and carol singing create a wonderful festive spirit for everyone to take in and enjoy. Here are some special events and scenes that you can visit to celebrate Christmas in Guernsey in style:

Christmas Shopping
St Peter Port is one of the most beautiful harbour towns in all of Europe – especially at Christmastime, with its cobbled streets winding up towards the harbour where a large modern Christmas tree lights up the water and all the surrounding area. There’s plenty of great places to shop, from the Folk & Costume Museum and Victorian Shop to Herm Island and the festive Christmas Markets. There’s something for everyone there –unique handmade gifts, soaps, jewellery, decorations, children’s toys, tool boxes, and traditional food items such as sugar mice, chocolates, jams, and even Christmas hampers.

Ice Skating
A guaranteed great time for absolutely anyone – the Le Friquet Garden Centre real ice skating rink is open for people of all ages and all abilities – and it’s made of real ice! If you want to enjoy some time on the rink, act soon because it will be closing on the last day of the year! All visitors are advised to book tickets in advance because it’s incredibly busy – so plan ahead to ensure you get your skating session.

Other Activities
There are plenty of things to do and places to go for more entertainment this Christmas in Guernsey. The Aladdin pantomime starts tomorrow, and Rapunzel will be on for a weekend in January. There will also be the Winter Fayre at Castle Cornet where children have the chance to meet Santa Claus, along with other children’s activities and wine tasting for adults.

If you’re looking for other things to do after Christmas in Guernsey next year, how about starting music lessons at the School of Popular Music? We offer classes and individual tutoring for all ages and all levels, in a variety of instruments. Get in touch today!
